The Associated Press reports ??The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis tested the boundaries of legitimate art Thursday with a film festival devoted to the online cat videos that pervade YouTube and social networks.?

Organizers said they wanted to find out whether the private experience of viewing the videos online would translate to a shared and social experience when shown on an outdoor screen on the museum's grounds.

The festival made room for various kinds of cat videos, with categories for comedy, drama, foreign, animated, musical, art-house and documentary. Participants voted on a "People's Choice" award, and several "lifetime achievements" were handed out to a few of the all-time popular videos. Read the full story.

(AP) ? Orders to U.S. companies rose in July, reflecting a surge in demand for autos and commercial aircraft. But in a troubling sign of manufacturing weakness, a key orders category that tracks business investment plans fell by the largest amount in eight months.

Factory orders rose 2.8 percent in July, the biggest overall advance in a year, reflecting sizable gains in demand for motor vehicles and airplanes, the Commerce Department said Friday. But core capital goods orders, viewed as a good proxy for investment spending, plunged 4 percent, the fourth setback in the past five months.

The worry is that businesses have begun to scale back their plans to expand and modernize in the face of spreading economic weakness in Europe and such major U.S. export markets as China, Brazil and India.

Europe's financial crisis has pushed many countries in that region into recession, a development that threatens exports of U.S. goods.

Economists are also worried that companies are already postponing plans to buy new equipment and hire new workers because of the uncertainty over how the federal budget deadlock will be resolved, a development that would represent another blow for an already weak recovery.

Steven Wood, chief economist at Insight Economics, said the strong overall orders increase in July did not change the fact that growth in demand for U.S. manufactured goods has slowed, reflecting all the problems facing the economy at the moment.

"The recent softness in manufacturing activity and capital spending is likely to continue, at least for several more months," Wood said.

For July, orders for durable goods, items from battleships to bicycles, increased 4.1 percent, slightly lower than the government's preliminary estimate last week of a 4.2 percent gain. Orders for non-durable goods, items such as food, clothing and paper, increased 1.5 percent following a 2.3 percent decline in June.

The strength in durable goods was led by a 53.9 percent surge in the volatile category of commercial aircraft while demand for motor vehicles climbed a strong 20.6 percent.

Orders for primary metals such as steel were up 2.9 percent but demand for heavy machinery fell 4.1 percent with orders for electric turbines and power generators dropping 26.9 percent.

The government reported Wednesday that the overall economy grew at an annual rate of 1.7 percent in the April-June quarter. While that was slightly better than the initial estimate of growth at 1.5 percent in the second quarter, it was still far below the pace needed to make a significant dent in the unemployment rate.

If a recession does occur, the Congressional Budget Office said that unemployment could rise to around 9 percent. It is currently at 8.3 percent.

Ten best GOP presidential acceptance speeches

Ronald Reagan lays out the choices facing voters -- and lays into Jimmy Carter -- in his 1980 acceptance speech.

Mitt Romney has a lot to live up to tonight.

For one thing, his wife Ann?s speech to the Republican National Convention on Tuesday won rave reviews from nonpartisan political analysts.

And then there?s the ghost of Ronald Reagan, the Republican Party icon whose memory and record has been invoked countless times over the past three days.

As the 2012 GOP presidential nominee?s big moment nears, here?s a look at the ten best Republican acceptance speeches of the past century.

Ronald Reagan, 1980

Any list of greatest convention speeches begins and ends with Ronald Reagan. The only question: Which one was better. We give the nod, by just a bit, to his 1980 speech. Addressing GOP delegates in Detroit, Reagan managed to exude optimism and confidence as he shared his conservative vision for America. Meanwhile, he eviscerated President Jimmy Carter for creating ?problems that cause pain and destroy the moral fiber of real people.?

?I will not stand by and watch this great country destroy itself under mediocre leadership that drifts from one crisis to the next, eroding our national will and purpose,? the former actor and California governor declared

Highlight: ?Can anyone look at the record of this administration and say, ?Well done??? Reagan asked. ?Can anyone compare the state of our economy when the Carter administration took office with where we are today and say, ?Keep up the good work???

Ronald Reagan, 1984

The 40th president?s renomination speech in Dallas was a patriotic ode to the spirit of America, the spirit of liberty and freedom, and a warning about the backsliding that would occur if liberal Democrats regained control of the levers of power. On the eve of the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, Reagan inspired chants of ?USA, USA? with his tales of athletic heroism and military accomplishment.

Highlight: ?We came together in a national crusade to make America great again, and to make a new beginning. Well, now it?s all coming together. With our beloved nation at peace, we?re in the midst of a springtime of hope for America. Greatness lies ahead of us.?

Richard Nixon, 1968

Richard Nixon was not one of the better orators to hold the nation?s highest office, but his 1968 acceptance speech may have been the best speech of his career (other than ?Checkers?). It was written poetically to appeal to ?the Silent Majority? of Americans discomfited by the turbulent times.

Highlight: ?As we look at America, we see cities enveloped in smoke and flame. We hear sirens in the night. We see Americans dying on distant battlefields abroad. We see Americans hating each other; fighting each other; killing each other at home.

?And as we see and hear these things, millions of Americans cry out in anguish. Did we come all this way for this??

Barry Goldwater, 1964

Was Barry Goldwater?s 1964 acceptance speech at the Cow Palace in San Francisco a masterful oration and a manifesto for a generation of young conservatives? Or was it an exercise in extremism that scared voters and led to a catastrophic defeat? The answer is both. But nearly five decades later, it is one of the most quoted and most admired speeches of the mid-twentieth century.

Highlight: ?Those who do not care for our cause, we don?t expect to enter our ranks in any case. And let our Republicanism, so focused and so dedicated, not be made fuzzy and futile by unthinking and stupid labels. I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice. And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue.?

Thomas Dewey, 1948

Don?t think of Thomas Dewey?s collapse in the 1948 general election or Harry Truman?s ?give ?em hell? comeback. The Republican from New York was riding high when he accepted his party?s nomination in Philadelphia. He delivered a stirring acceptance speech ? far superior to his 1944 address ? that waxed philosophical about America?s place in a post-war world and the stakes to the nation of retreating in the faced of Communist aggression.

Highlight: ?We have found the means to blow this world of ours apart, physically. We have not yet found the spiritual means to put together the world?s broken pieces, to bind up its wounds, to make a good society, a community of men of good will that fits our dreams.?

Dwight Eisenhower, 1952

In case there was anybody in the world who didn?t know that Ike was the Supreme Allied Commander during World War II, the Republican presidential nominee reminded them of his heroic service with repeated war metaphors ? and some moving stories of conversations with comrades on the eve of battle. He called for a ?Republican crusade? to rid the nation of waste and corruption following two decades of nonstop Democratic rule.

Highlight: ?Today is the first day of this great battle. The road that leads to Nov. 4 is a fighting road. In that fight I will keep nothing in reserve.?

Ike delivered a hard-hitting speech with lots of war metaphors.

George Bush, 1988

Democrat Michael Dukakis left the 1988 Democratic National Convention with a double-digit lead over Vice President George Bush. But Bush?s political team refocused the debate on contrasting values ? on foreign policy, on values, on patriotism, on crime and punishment, but especially on taxes.? He portrayed the Massachusetts governor as a technocrat and a pessimist who sees ?a long, slow decline for our country, an inevitable fall mandated by impersonal historical forces.? By the end of the convention, Bush had grabbed a lead he never relinquished.

Highlight: ?My opponent now says, he?ll raise [taxes] as a last resort, or a third resort. But when a politician talks like that, you know that?s one resort he?ll be checking into. My opponent won?t rule out raising taxes. But I will. And the Congress will push me to raise taxes, and I?ll say no, and they?ll push, and I?ll say no, and they?ll push again, and I?ll say, to them, ?Read my lips: no new taxes.??

Echoes of Romney: Alf Landon

Alf Landon, 1936

Alf Landon?s acceptance speech sounds like a Romney campaign speech. It reminds voters how a Democratic president had taken office in a terrible economic time and had failed to turn the economy around. It noted that unemployment remained unacceptably high and that activist government was not the answer. The flaw in his address: An alternative vision to the New Deal.

Highlight: ?Judged by the things that make us a nation of happy families, the New Deal has fallen far short of success. The proof of this is in the record. The record shows that in 1933 the primary need was jobs for the unemployed. The record shows that in 1936 the primary need still is jobs for the unemployed.?

George W. Bush, 2000

How do you win a presidential election against the party in power during a time of peace and prosperity. In a well-paced acceptance speech that offered both philosophical and personal contrasts, Texas Gov. George W. Bush said the Democratic administration of Bill Clinton and Al Gore had ?coasted through prosperity.? He repeated invoked his mantra, ?This administration had its moment. They had their chance. They have not led. We will.?

Highlight: ?Today, our high taxes fund a surplus. Some say that growing federal surplus means Washington has more money to spend. But they?ve got it backwards. The surplus is not the government?s money. The surplus is the people?s money.?

Wendell Willkie, 1940

The Republican Party in 1940 was taken over by an Indiana businessman and self-professed liberal Democrat who split with President Franklin Roosevelt over increasing government involvement in the U.S. economy. In his acceptance speech, Wendell Willkie noted that ?I was a liberal before many of [New Deal] men had heard the word? and he argued that FDR had ?distorted? reformist liberalism.

A liberal Democrat captured the Republican nomination in 1940 in an historical oddity.

As the grandson of German immigrants, he also chided Roosevelt for failing to do more to make America competitive with Hitler?s Third Reich. The speech comes at a turning point in American history ? squeezed between the end of the New Deal and U.S. involvement in World War II ? and it captures the moment powerfully.

Highlight: ?Today great institutions of freedom, for which humanity has spilled so much blood, lie in ruins. In Europe those rights of person and property ?the civil liberties?which your ancestors fought for, and which you still enjoy, are virtually extinct. And it is my profound conviction that even here in this country, the Democratic Party, under its present leadership, will prove incapable of protecting those liberties of yours.?

Condoleezza Rice Has a Lot of Nerve

150989756 Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice speaks at the Republican National Convention on Aug. 29, 2012

To watch Condoleezza Rice, the face of George W. Bush?s foreign policy, stand before a convention of cheering Republicans and condemn Barack Obama for diminishing America?s standing in the world?one can only gasp at the magnitude of chutzpah in one woman.

After describing a world of freedom fighters and tyrants, Bush?s former secretary of state and national security adviser lamented, ?Everyone asks, where does America stand?? Indeed that is the question of the hour,? she continued, for when ?friends or foes alike don?t know the answer to that question, unambiguously and clearly, the world is likely to be a more dangerous and chaotic place ? We cannot be reluctant to lead, and you cannot lead from behind.?

The solution, she concluded, is to elect Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan. ?They know what to do,? she said. ?They know that our friends and allies must again be able to trust us.?

First, it?s not at all clear that they have the slightest idea what to do or even?judging from Romney?s disastrously tin-eared trip to Europe this summer?how to think about what to do.

Second (this is the chutzpah part), Condi Rice?a top adviser in the most disastrous, reputation-crippling foreign-policy administration in decades?has no business lecturing anybody on this score.

Finally, Obama has done pretty well in foreign policy, and polls of actual foreigners?including allies?suggest that they think so too.

True, his foreign ratings?and America?s?have slipped a bit since the halcyon days when he first took office, but for the most part they?re still considerably higher than those of the Bush era.

According to a recent survey by the Poll Research Center, 53 percent of British citizens had a favorable view of the United States in 2008, the last year of Bush?s presidency. Today the figure is 60 percent. In France, the figure rose from 42 percent to 69 percent; the Czech Republic, from 45 to 54 percent; Germany, from 31 to 52 percent; Japan, from 50 to 72 percent; Mexico, from 47 to 56 percent. Only in the Arab countries (Lebanon, Egypt, Jordan) has the rating declined (and do the Republicans really care much about that?).

Another Pew Poll, released just this week, about global attitudes toward President Obama as a leader makes Rice?s concerns seem ridiculous. As summarized by CNN, 87 percent of the Germans, 86 percent of the French, 80 percent of the British, and 74 percent of the Japanese have confidence in Obama?in each case, more confidence than they have in their own leaders. More striking still, 92 percent of the French, 89 percent of the Germans, 73 percent of the British, and 66 percent of the Japanese want Obama re-elected.

What does Condi Rice know about Obama?s reputation in the world that the citizens of the world don?t?

Earlier in the evening, Sen. John McCain, Obama?s GOP opponent in the 2008 election, voiced the same concerns more grumpily. (Rice, it must be said, was eloquent, if a bit nervous at the start, and did not descend to the crowd?s rabidity; her most passionate plea, in fact, was for better schooling of K-12 youth.)

Birmingham mosquito control - Tips for Getting Rid of Pests

Like humans, pests also need nutrients, water, and a protected habitat to survive. The best way to pest-proof your home is to eliminate such sources from areas that pests can easily reach. This method, known as exclusion, is known by all pest control companies to be the best option for getting rid of all types of pests in your home.

To get your home free of pests, start by inspecting the outside. Garbage, leaves, grass, sticks, and other debris need to be removed from your porch and yard. Large trees and bushes should be routinely trimmed, especially if they're touching or near your home. If you have dogs, cats, or birds, make sure that their living habitats are also regularly cleaned, as their food and feces is an attraction for pests.

Next, check all of the water sources in your home including; sinks, drainage systems, toilets, and hose attachments. There shouldn't be any leaks, as pests such as mosquitoes can reproduce in puddles and other places where water is enclosed. If there are places in which the water cannot be removed or cleaned, it is recommended that you obtain mosquito control dunks. These prevent mosquitoes from reproducing and are entirely safe to use in your home.

As small as a crack or hole may seem, these should always be considered as an opportunity for pests to invade. Cockroaches, mice, ants, and termites are flexible and small, which makes it easy for them to fit into the smallest opening. Examine your home (inside and out) for any holes or cracks and repair the damage immediately.

Lastly, check inside of your home for food that is not put away. Even the tiniest crumbs can attract pests. Make it a daily routine to clean up right away after eating and do not allow your children to eat anywhere but the dining room or kitchen. This will minimize the amount of food or crumbs that fall on the floor, furniture, beds, etc.

When looking for the best pest control treatment, it is important to do your research. Why? Because sometimes using sprays or other first-line products only makes the problem worse. For example, an ant infestation will usually become bigger with sprays because only the ants that were sprayed will die. Meanwhile, the queen will keep on reproducing in the nest.

You can also avoid a pest invasion by using a preventative treatment around your home. This can be done by a professional or you can apply the treatment on your own and save some money. The products come in sprays or even granules, but it is up to you to determine which is the best option. If you have pets or children, it is extremely important to make sure that the product is not toxic; otherwise, you will have to make the treated area off-limits at all times.

If in doubt, hiring a pest control company is your best bet. They are highly trained professionals who know what they're doing and can answer any questions you may have.

Madrid beats 10-man Barca to win Super Cup

MADRID (AP) - Real Madrid took advantage of quick goals to beat 10-man Barcelona 2-1 on Wednesday to win the Spanish Super Cup on away goals after the two-legged tie ended 4-4.

Gonzalo Higuain and Cristiano Ronaldo put Madrid in control with goals inside 23 minutes at the Santiago Bernabeu to take advantage of Barcelona's poor start.

Adriano was red-carded for tripping Ronaldo as he was set to race clear on goalkeeper Victor Valdes in the 28th to further thwart the visitors' hopes.

But Lionel Messi curled home an exquisite free kick before halftime of another thrilling match between the Spanish giants with the league champions hanging on to beat the cup holders for the title.

Alex Song and Luka Modric both made their debuts for their clubs, with Madrid's first victory of the season in all competitions helping it recover from its worst start for nearly 40 years and edging it ahead of Barcelona 88-87 in wins between the "clasico" rivals.

It also provided coach Jose Mourinho with the last piece of silverware missing from his Spanish trophy cabinet. The Portuguese coach's 20th title means he has won every trophy available in the four leagues where he's coached - Spain, England, Italy and Portugal.

WellPoint CEO Braly quits amid sagging results

(AP) ? WellPoint Inc. President and CEO Angela Braly resigned Tuesday amid investor frustration with disappointing financial results at the nation's second-largest health insurer.

The Indianapolis-based company announced that its executive vice president and general counsel, John Cannon, will serve as interim president and CEO. With Braly's departure, lead director Jackie Ward was named the non-executive chair of the board of directors, WellPoint said.

Ward says Cannon does not wish to be considered as a candidate for permanent CEO. The company said it has hired an executive search firm to help in find a replacement for Braly, who took over as president and CEO in 2007 and added the title of chair of the board in 2010.

Investors had become increasing anxious about WellPoint's performance over the past year. Last month, WellPoint cut its 2012 profit forecast and reported second-quarter earnings that fell short of Wall Street's expectations, triggering a sharp drop in its share price.

The company's shares rose nearly 3 percent in extended trading following Wednesday's announcement of Braly's departure.

WellPoint signaled, however, that it would stay the course, despite the change at the top.

"Our board continues to believe that time will prove the wisdom of potentially transformative actions taken under Angela's leadership," Ward said in a statement. "But now is the right time for a leadership change."

The company's directors "believe the remaining executive team is dynamic and strong, with great potential to drive WellPoint's future success," Ward added.

WellPoint announced earlier last month it would spend about $4.46 billion to buy Amerigroup Corp., which runs Medicaid coverage in 13 states. Medicaid is the state-federal program that provides coverage for the needy and disabled. Insurers see lucrative growth opportunities in working with people who qualify for both Medicaid and the federally funded Medicare program.

Earlier this year, the insurer also completed its acquisition of contact lens retailer 1-800 Contacts Inc., and it continues to expand a Medicare Advantage plan provider it acquired last year.

Braly and Wellpoint became a focal point for criticism during the health care overhaul 2010, after complaints spread about plans to increase premiums by around 25 percent for individual insurance policies sold by the insurer's Anthem Blue Cross subsidiary in California. The company later backed off that rate hike.

WellPoint runs Blue Cross Blue Shield plans in 14 states and is second only to UnitedHealth Group Inc. in both revenue and enrollment.

Improve Customer Experience with Customer Interaction Services ...

Improve Customer Experience with Customer Interaction Services

"Good customers are as rare as Latinum - treasure them" is an old Klingon proverb, but how many
enterprises can actually do that. In today's hypercompetitive business environment, every enterprise across
every industry knows the value of customers. Customers are the lifeblood of any organization and therefore
enterprises must be careful when providing customer services.

All enterprises know the role of customer experience in customer satisfaction, which eventually leads to
customer retention and customer loyalty. Therefore, the first step that enterprises must focus on for
retaining customers is to take control of customer experience and do all that they can to improve customer
experience.

Studies have shown that customer retention has a direct impact on profitability. A recent research by John
Fleming and Jim Asplund indicates that engaged customers generate 1.7 times more revenue than normal
customers do, while having engaged employees and engaged customers return a revenue gain of 3.4 times
the norm.

Every enterprise wants to serve customers satisfactorily by ensuring that the common journeys that a
customer undertakes after purchasing a product is easy smooth and hassle free. However, not all enterprises
could provide services that exceed customer expectations. In such circumstances, what customers require is
effective customer experience solutions that understand their needs and requirements and help them with
industry-specific applications.

A typical consumer journey involves a series of interactions that lead to a specific outcome for the
consumer--one that can be as complex as resolving questions about a first bill or as straightforward as a
credit card fraud alert. With these customer interaction services, the common issues that cause problems for
the consumer and escalate costs for the enterprises are resolved amicably. A global leader in providing
intuitive customer service software and services has come up with a software platform that provides smarter
and more effective multi-channel customer service. It comes with interactive intelligence that powers
insights and improves consumer experiences by building on the past--and ensuring that every new
interaction, with each individual, gets better all the time.

A popular proverb says that if customers have a good experience, they will tell one person but if they have a
bad experience, they will tell ten. However, with effective customer experience solutions, enterprises can

Cricket bringing peace in Afghanistan, says Zakhilwal

Cricket is bringing peace to war-ravaged Afghanistan and can further stabilise the country if foreign teams tour, an official said Sunday.

Afghanistan took a big step at international level by playing former world champions Australia on Saturday, their second limited overs match following their first against Pakistan six months earlier.

Despite their 66-run defeat, Afghanistan put up a great fight, further hinting they can improve if given more chances against top teams.

Afghanistan Cricket Board president Omar Zakhilwal believes the Australia match will go a long way in promoting the game and, in turn, peace in his country.

"It's a great occasion," Zakhilwal told AFP. "The one-day matches with Pakistan and Australia will go a long way in promoting cricket which is bringing peace in our country."

Cricket has attained enormous popularity in the country which has been mired in conflict since the ouster of the Taliban in 2001 with United States-led coalition forces still fighting insurgency and extremism.

Cricket has progressed by leaps and bounds in the last three years after it was introduced by youths who learnt the game in refugee camps in Pakistan following the Soviet invasion of their country in 1979.

In 2009 Afghanistan finished fifth in the 2011 World Cup qualifiers, earning the right to play one-day internationals.

Afghanistan then qualified for the 2010 World Twenty20 held in the Caribbean followed by their silver medal finish in the Asian Games in China the same year.

They have once again earned the right to play the fourth edition of the World Twenty20 to be held in Sri Lanka next month.

"The whole of Afghanistan is looking forward to the World Twenty20. If you see the performance of our players, and even though we may not have won these matches, but the way the players stood up to the pressure of international cricket proves that we have come a long way," said Zakhilwal.

"The youth are drawn away from hostilities by cricket. Today they watch, tomorrow they will play."

Zakhilwal, also the finance minister in the Hamid Karzai-led government, said the Australia match sends a positive message to the world.

"The message is that with determination and with a cause, these youngsters, who've gone through difficult times, can train and have big dreams.

"80-90 percent of the population were watching the match on television and listening to the radio. This is uniting the nation and is sending a positive message to the youth, so cricket is proving more than the game."

Zakhilwal said his Board owed a big thanks to Cricket Australia (CA).

"For them to give us this opportuntiy and come all the way from Australia to play is a great help. If any other country comes forward and plays, it will be good for our cricket."

Zakhilwal said his board was in touch with India, who they are placed with in the World Twenty20, along with defending champions England.

"We are in discussion with India to play a match and we also hope they invite our players into the Indian Premier League because that will establish them further," said Zakhilwal.

"If any team comes to Afghanistan and plays then it will be good for us. There are so many misconceptions about Afghanistan, teams can feel fully secure in Kabul, they will have lot of fans who will cheer for them," he said.

Neil Armstrong, first man to walk on moon, dies

Astronaut Neil Armstrong awed the entire planet when he became the first man to step foot on the moon in 1969. He died Saturday at age 82. NBC's Tom Costello reports on Armstrong's life and legacy.

By Alan Boyle

Editor's note: An early headline on this story briefly misstated Neil Armstrong's name.

First moonwalker Neil Armstrong's death at the age of 82 marks the passing of a "reluctant American hero," as well as the dimming of the Space Age's brightest moment.

His death followed complications from heart-bypass surgery he underwent this month, Armstrong's family said today in a statement released by NASA. The first public report?of?Armstrong's death came via NBC News' Cape Canaveral correspondent, Jay Barbree, a longtime friend.?

Armstrong has been immortalized in human history as the first human to set foot on a celestial body beyond Earth. "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind," he radioed back to Earth from the moon on July 20, 1969.

NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said that "as long as there are history books, Neil Armstrong will be included in them."

Armstrong's fellow moonwalker on the Apollo 11 mission, Buzz Aldrin, was among the legions mourning his passage. "We are missing a great spokesman and leader in the space program," Aldrin said in a BBC interview. He said he'd remember Armstrong "as being a very capable commander and leader of an achievement that will be recognized until man sets foot on the planet Mars."

Michael Collins, the crewmate who circled the moon in the Apollo 11 command module while Armstrong and Aldrin took that first trip to the lunar surface, also paid tribute to his commander in a NASA statement: "He was the best, and I will miss him terribly."

President Barack Obama said that Armstrong and his crew "carried with them the aspirations of an entire nation," and that the first steps on the moon "delivered a moment of human achievement that will never be forgotten."

"Today, Neil's spirit of discovery lives on in all the men and women who have devoted their lives to exploring the unknown ? including those who are ensuring that we reach higher and go further in space," Obama said in a White House statement. "That legacy will endure ? sparked by a man who taught us the enormous power of one small step."

NBC's Jay Barbree, who has covered every manned space mission in U.S. history, was first to break the news that Neil Armstrong had died. He discusses the astronaut's life with NBC's Lester Holt.

The "one small step" served as the climax of a superpower space race with the Soviet Union, and arguably established the United States' primacy in outer space for decades to come. But Apollo 11 also set a precedent for peaceful cooperation in space. "We came in peace for all mankind," the plaque left behind on the moon read. At one point during Armstrong's first moonwalk, he stopped for what he called a "tender moment" and set down a patch to commemorate NASA astronauts and Soviet cosmonauts who died in the course of their duties.

Before and after the moon
The Ohio-born Armstrong began his career in aerospace as a Navy fighter pilot who served with distinction in the Korean War. During the 1950s, he was a test pilot with experience flying more than 200 kinds of aircraft. He was accepted into NASA's second astronaut class in 1962, and during his mission as Gemini 8 commander in 1966, he tamed his wildly spinning capsule and brought it in for an emergency landing.

That quiet cool served him well during Apollo 11, when he had to take manual control of the lunar module, nicknamed Eagle, during the landing. When the craft touched down in the moon's Sea of Tranquility, about 30 seconds' worth of fuel remained.

"Houston, Tranquility Base here," Armstrong reported to Mission Control. "The Eagle has landed."

Armstrong and Aldrin spent more than 21 hours on the lunar surface, including two and a half hours' worth of moonwalking. They were amazed to come back to Earth and see how billions of people across the planet had followed their exploits. "Neil, look up there," Aldrin told him as he pointed at a TV screen. "We missed the whole thing."

After his moon mission, Armstrong took a low profile, becoming what his family called a "reluctant American hero who always believed he was just doing his job." He left NASA in 1971, and took on executive positions in the aerospace industry as well as a teaching position in the University of Cincinnati's engineering department. ?Armstrong served on several policy commissions, including the presidential panel that investigated the 1986 Challenger explosion.

Concerned about future spaceflight
In his latter years, Armstrong became increasingly concerned about America's continuing leadership in space. He was a strong proponent of efforts to send American astronauts back to the moon, and feared that NASA's cancellation of its return-to-the-moon program would cede America's position as a leader in space exploration to other nations.?

Neil Armstrong's first step on the moon and his now famous first words.

"Some question why America should return to the moon," Armstrong told a House committee in 2010. "'After all,' they say, 'we have already been there.' I find that mystifying. It would be as if 16th-century monarchs proclaimed that 'we need not go to the New World, we have already been there.'"

When NBC's Jay Barbree asked Armstrong last month to reflect on the future of spaceflight, for the 43rd anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing, the former astronaut pointed to remarks in which he said the lunar environment was "an exceptional location to learn about traveling to more distant places."

"I am persuaded that a return to the moon would be the most productive path to expanding the human presence in the solar system," he wrote.

Armstrong was famous for staying out of fame's spotlight as much as he could. Some outsiders may have faulted him for his reticence, but not his fellow astronauts.

"Most of our group?in those days could have accomplished?the challenge of the mission," Apollo 7 astronaut Walt Cunningham told NBC News' James Oberg in an email, "but I do not know?a one that could have handled the?resulting notoriety as well as Neil did."?

Over the past year, Armstrong was a bit more in the public eye. Last November, he and other space pioneers ? including Aldrin, Collins and John Glenn, the first American in orbit ??were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal during a ceremony at the U.S. Capitol.

In February, Armstrong spoke at Ohio State University during a February event honoring the 50th anniversary of Glenn's history-making spaceflight. In May, Armstrong joined Apollo 17 commander Gene Cernan, the last man to walk on the moon, at Pensacola Naval Air Station in Florida to support the opening of the National Flight Academy, which aims to teach math and science to kids through an aviation-oriented camp.

On Aug. 7, just two days after his 82nd birthday, Armstrong underwent quadruple-bypass heart surgery after flunking a medical stress test. At the time, his wife, Carol, reported that her husband was "doing great" ? but today the family said complications from that surgery led to his death.

"While we mourn the loss of a very good man, we also celebrate his remarkable life and hope that it serves as an example to young people around the world to work hard to make their dreams come true, to be willing to explore and push the limits, and to selflessly serve a cause greater than themselves," the family said in today's statement.?"For those who may ask what they can do to honor Neil, we have a simple request. Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink."

Armstrong is survived by his wife, two sons, a stepson and stepdaughter, 10 grandchildren, a brother and a sister, NASA said. A website, NeilArmstrongInfo.com, has been created to provide more information about Armstrong's life and legacy.

Quick bites about Neil Armstrong:

  • Armstrong 's interest in flight began in childhood: He earned his pilot's license while still a boy.
  • Armstrong's pulse was measured at 150 beats per minute as he guided the lunar lander to the moon's surface, NASA said. "I believe every human has a finite number of heartbeats," Armstrong once said. "I don't intend to waste any of mine."
  • Asked about his experience on the moon, he told CBS: "It's an interesting place to be. I recommend it."
  • A crater on the moon is named for Armstrong. It is located about 30 miles (50 kilometers) from the site of the landing.
  • In 2005 Armstrong was upset to learn that his barber had sold clippings of his hair to a collector for $3,000. The man who bought the hair refused to return it, saying he was adding it to his collection of locks from Abraham Lincoln, Napoleon, Marilyn Monroe, Albert Einstein and others.
  • Although he was famously reticent, Armstrong once appeared in a TV commercial for the U.S. automaker Chrysler. He said he made the ad because of Chrysler's engineering history and his desire to help the company out of financial troubles. Armstrong also recorded public service announcements from NASA to promote the agency's Constellation back-to-the-moon program, which was later canceled.

Oil rises as storm barrels thru Gulf of Mexico

(AP) ? Oil prices rose Monday as Tropical Storm Isaac barreled across the Gulf of Mexico and toward the U.S. mainland, picking up strength and threatening oil and refining operations. An explosion at a refinery in Venezuela also pushed prices higher.

Benchmark crude for October delivery rose $1.04 to $97.19 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 12 cents to finish at $96.15 per barrel on the Nymex on Friday.

Brent crude rose 18 cents to $113.77 on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

Oil analyst Stephen Schork said in an email commentary that he expects "much higher volatility this week" due to Tropical Storm Isaac, which weather forecasters said would pick up strength before striking as a Category 2 hurricane somewhere between New Orleans and the Florida Panhandle on Wednesday.

Schork worries that the storm will be a repeat of Hurricanes Katrina in 2005 and Gustav in 208, damaging Gulf refineries and pipelines and disrupting oil tanker traffic.

Another factor pushing up prices was an explosion and fire that shut down operations at the Amuay refinery in western Venezuela, said Victor Shum, energy analyst at consultancy Purvin & Gertz in Singapore.

Amuay is among the world's largest refineries and is part of the Paraguana Refinery Complex, which also includes the adjacent Cardon refinery. Together, the refineries process about 900,000 barrels of crude per day and 200,000 barrels of gasoline.

Gasoline futures rose 9 cents to $3.004 per gallon. Heating oil rose nearly 6 cents to $3.177 per gallon. Natural gas rose 3 cents to $2.733 per 1,000 cubic feet.

92% Safety Not Guaranteed

Question: If you could go back in time, what time would you return to and why? Normally I answer, or vaguely answer, my own questions in these reviews but I?m not going to on this one. I am not an overly nostalgic person unless it has to do with a film or a band. Plus, after seeing Safety Not Guaranteed this past weekend, I learned a valuable lesson. Sorry if this confuses anyone but you will just have to see Safety Not Guaranteed to understand what I am referring to?.or trying to, at least. I have wanted to see this film for a long time. There was just something about the story that drew me to it ? not too long ago I even posted the preview on here; and I save those posts usually for films that I think will be interesting, unique or that tell a story that will move me. This one did, not drastically, but enough to get me out of my writer?s block (fingers crossed) and make me contemplate parts of my life. That?s what I want from most films, art, books, etc?an opportunity to think; notice something you hadn?t before; and look upon an idea with a fresh perspective, etc? Safety Not Guaranteed took on an age-old idea: looking back on your past with regret and hoping you can change things so you wouldn?t be unhappy now. And the filmmakers made a charming, perfectly decent film that will just make you smile. Plus, they added the idea of time travel. Who wouldn?t like that, right? So, I ask again, would you want to go back in time and why? For most, I believe, the reasoning will involve another person: a partner, girlfriend, boyfriend, parent or someone with whom you hurt or they did something that haunts you, still. We all make mistakes. Mistakes are thrust upon us. We fall in love with the wrong person, or the right person, and hearts get broken no matter what. Also, we can be cruel to another. Admit it ? we have ALL been there. We are human. Safety Not Guaranteed represented several aspects of people?s regret and/or searching for the cure to change their current situation. And I think most will be able to relate. Now the next question(s): Could we fix it? Should we fix it? Would we be better off if we changed these brief, few moments of the past? Or are we where we are supposed to be? Thinking about regrets is enough to drive you a little mad. And that?s how the actor in this film, Mark Duplass? character, is portrayed. Someone who must be insane because he puts a classified ad in the paper requesting a partner go back in time with him. He declares it will be dangerous and your safety will not be guaranteed. His ad intrigues a magazine editor ? enough to send a writer and two interns to check the story out. There are a couple other character in this film that display the same sort of desire to change their present by reaching towards the past: The young intern, Darius, played by Aubrey Plaza and her boss, Jeff, played by Jake. M. Johnson. Both these characters represented the vast differences on why someone would want to go back in time. I liked both characters, a lot. In fact, Jeff was one that kept the comedy going in this film. He?s the type of guy you don?t want to like but he evokes sympathy when you aren?t expecting. Darius is a sarcastic girl that has a deep, hidden secret on why she is unhappy now. As for the rest of the story, no more details. Just go see this film. It is slated as a comedy, and it was absolutely funny at parts but it is not slap stick or a joke every few minutes type of film. The humor is subtle and well placed. Safety Not Guaranteed showed real humor, the humor we all have in our lives. The absurdity that is ever present ? that?s what makes it a comedy. However, I would categorize this as a drama as well. And that?s a compliment. Bottom line: Just give me a good story, tell it well and with respect (especially for the audience), and you?ve got a fan in me. Safety Not Guaranteed did all three. Well done! My favorite thing: There might too many things to list here. I just really, really liked this film. Okay, I laughed OUT LOUD when Jeff raises his fists in the air. His reaction to what was happening just kept me smiling and smiling. My least favorite thing: I got nothing this time. Directed by Colin Trevorrow, Big Beach Films, 2012 Genre: Comedy Starring: Aubrey Plaza, Jake M. Johnson, Mark Duplass, Karan Soni, Jeff Garlin and Kristen Bell.
