Pittsburgh is making smart energy choices

Pittsburgh recently joined President Obama's "Better Buildings Challenge," which will help unleash private sector investments in energy efficiency improvements to our nation's buildings. As part of the challenge, Pittsburgh has pledged to cut energy consumption by 20 percent over the next decade and is also planning to replace 10 percent of the city's 40,000 streetlights with LEDs, install five solar thermal and one photovoltaic project, and to purchase 25 percent of all electricity needs through green sources.

In these times of shrinking budgets and often rising energy costs, Pittsburgh is charting a path that will lead it to a secure future through cost-effective efforts that reduce energy use, save money, and cut pollution.

In fact, energy efficiency upgrades remain the cheapest, cleanest and fastest way to cut our energy use and reduce dangerous pollution, while creating jobs and stimulating Pennsylvania's economy. We applaud the Obama administration for prioritizing energy efficiency and congratulate Pittsburgh for rising to the challenge.
